The sailors were lost in the middle of the ocean - forty-three degrees north and fifty-two west, to be specific. Nowhere near Kanaloa's home, but the sea god nevertheless answered their plea for aid as the whirlpools surrounded them.
Although he could not calm the seas so far away, he sent them fragments of a map and pages of a logbook. Once they assembled both, they were able to navigate a path through the treacherous waters, avoiding the whirlpools and never retracing itself, although it crossed itself many times.
